About HKSI Exams
What is HKSI LE Paper 1?
It stands for Licensing Examination for Securities and Futures Intermediaries (LE) Paper 1 on securities regulations.
This exam is required if you want to apply for a license with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) for any Regulated Activity.
By passing this exam, you will satisfy SFC's competence requirements with respect to local regulatory knowledge when applying for the SFC license.
If you intend to pursue a front office role (sales, trading, research, corporate finance, asset management, etc) in an investment bank or a fund or if you are transferring your front office position from an overseas location to Hong Kong, you will be required to take this exam.
HKSI administers computer-based Paper 1 Exam almost every day and paper-based Paper 1 Exam on the third Saturday of each month.
In Paper 1 Exam, you need to finish 60 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes. And you need to get at least 70% (i.e. 42 questions right) in order to pass.
What is HKSI LE Paper 7?
This Paper is the most popular practical paper and deals with Financial Markets.
This exam is required if you want to apply for a license with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) for any Regulated Activity and you do not have the required industry qualifications (e.g. prior industry experience or a business degree).
If you intend to pursue a front office role (sales, trading, research, corporate finance, asset management, etc) in an investment bank or a fund, you will be required to take this exam.
HKSI administers computer-based Paper 7 Exam almost every day and paper-based Paper 7 Exam on the third Saturday of each month.
In Paper 7 Exam, you need to finish 60 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes. And you need to get at least 70% (i.e. 42 questions right) in order to pass.
What is HKSI LE Paper 8?
This Paper deals with securities.
You are required to take this exam if you want to apply for a Type 1 (Dealing in Securities), Type 4 (Advising on Securities) or Type 8 (Securities Margin Financing) license with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and you do not have the required industry qualifications (e.g. prior industry experience or a business degree).
If you intend to pursue a position that deals with securities (equities & fixed income), you will be required to take this exam.
HKSI administers computer-based Paper 8 Exam almost every day and paper-based Paper 8 Exam on the third Saturday of each month.
In Paper 8 Exam, you need to finish 40 multiple choice questions in 60 minutes. And you need to get at least 70% (i.e. 28 questions right) in order to pass.
What is HKSI LE Paper 9?
This Paper deals with derivatives.
You are required to take this exam if you want to apply for a Type 2 (Dealing in future contracts) or Type 5 (Advising on future contracts) license with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and you do not have the required industry qualifications (e.g. prior industry experience or a business degree).
If you intend to pursue a position that deals with derivatives (equity derivatives & fixed income derivatives), you will be required to take this exam.
HKSI administers computer-based Paper 9 Exam four to five times a month.
In Paper 9 Exam, you need to finish 40 multiple choice questions in 60 minutes. And you need to get at least 70% (i.e. 28 questions right) in order to pass.
Lastly, for Paper 8 and Paper 9 candidates, remember to bring a calculator to the exam. Make sure your calculator is in the approved list.
